Welcome to our Island
The early history of the island indicates that the Island formed part of the Rempstone and Wareham Estate until 1935 when it was sold to the Hon Kathleen Laurence, Daughter of Lord Illiffe.
The instruction of Sir Edward Maufe MA FRIBA, (the Architect of Guildford Cathedral) to design and oversee the construction of the main house on the Island is attributed to Kathleen Laurence, who also gained planning permission for the pier and permission for a further three cottages which now comprise two of the holiday cottages.
The pier, at 110 feet long, leads to a boathouse and slipway and the island is served by its own water supply.
From 1940 the Island was requisitioned by the Royal Navy and combined as a training ground as HMS Turtle which was based at the Marines base in Hamworthy.
The peaceful surroundings inspired Sir Thomas Beecham, a visitor to the Island to pen his biography of the composer, Frederick Delius.
Round Island really is a special place, and we are delighted to share it with our Guests. Holidaying on a private island is sure to bring to mind some questions on the practicalities!
Our Island Caretakers, Caroline and Steve live on the island full-time. Steve will collect you from our Poole Marina base at a convenient pre-arranged time for the 20 minute trip over to Round Island. Our launch is fully licensed for transporting Guests within the Harbour.
Visitors are welcome to bring their own boats and use our pier and 2 swinging moorings with prior arrangement.
We dont have wifi. Our BT line comes to us under the seabed, as does our electricity, and doesn't have the strength to provide wifi across the island. We do however enioy 4G and 5G.
Our Drinking water comes from our artesian well to the south of the island, and is filtrated on site. Our filtration system is well maintained and regularly inspected and tested.
